Answers to Common Roof Questions

Each answer is general information from public sources, not legal advice or a verdict on your roof.

Who runs this site, and who pays for it?

It's a referral service, not a roofing company. Your request goes to one independent local roofer, and that roofer's company pays this site a fee for every referral it gets. You never pay us, and we never hand you a reward, credit or anything else for asking. This site plays no part in the job itself.

Does Iowa license roofers?

No state roofing license exists in Iowa, and no City of Newton or Jasper County roofer license was found. The state does require contractor registration from anyone who makes $2,000 or more a year from construction, and those records are open to the public. Ask the roofer for its Iowa contractor registration, look it up on the state's lookup, and ask for proof of liability insurance.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Newton, Iowa?

That hasn't been confirmed, so ask the City of Newton's Building Division before any work begins. The roofer is normally the one who pulls a permit when a job needs it. Newton has two National Register districts, one downtown by the courthouse and one around Maytag Park. Homes in either may face a review before the roof's look changes, so ask the City first.

What does a new roof cost in Iowa?

RoofObservations' 2026 Iowa guide puts Iowa 3-tab shingles at about $5.45 per sq ft, Iowa architectural shingles at about $5.95 and Iowa premium shingles at about $7.40, installed. Iowa exposed-fastener metal runs about $8.00 to $10.00 per sq ft, and Iowa standing-seam metal about $12.40 to $15.40. Size, pitch and decking repairs move the real number, and the cost guide explains how.

Can a roofer help with my insurance claim?

Documenting damage and writing an estimate are fine, but Iowa law bars a residential roofer from representing you on a claim, negotiating it or advertising that it will. Settling the claim falls to you and your insurer, or to a public adjuster or attorney working for you. On insurance-related work, the roofer must hand you a bold-type written notice, before or when you sign, explaining that the full contract price could be owed no matter how much the insurer pays.

Can a roofer pay or waive my deductible?

No. Under Iowa law, a residential roofer can't advertise a deductible rebate, or promise one, as a way to win the work. The deductible is yours to cover. An offer to absorb it, a gift for signing or a reward for sending neighbors their way is a warning sign, and a good reason to look elsewhere.

Can I cancel a roofing contract if my claim is denied?

Iowa gives no special cancel window after an insurer denies a claim, so read any contract closely before you sign it. A separate right does cover sales made at your door: if you buy something for $25 or more at home rather than at the seller's business, you can cancel until midnight on the third business day.

What if a contractor asks me to assign my insurance benefits?

Think carefully before agreeing at all. Under Iowa law, a contractor who takes a post-loss assignment can only be a co-payee alongside you and your mortgage lender. Iowa also lets you back out of that assignment, for any reason and with no penalty, inside the first five business days. Keeping the insurance money in your own hands is the simpler path.

Should I repair or replace my roof?

It depends on age, material and what you're seeing. Central Iowa roofs face straight-line wind, summer storms, freeze-thaw cycles and ice dams after heavy snow, and some of that damage can be fixed without a full tear-off. The repair-or-replace quiz gives a quick read from five questions, and a roofer's inspection settles it.

Which towns can send a request?

Homes in Newton, Iowa are covered, along with nearby Colfax, IA, Prairie City, IA, Monroe, IA and Baxter, IA in Jasper County, and Grinnell, IA, which sits east in Poweshiek County. The service areas page lists them all.
