Storm Damage Is Not Always Obvious

On August 10, 2020, a derecho crossed central Iowa and brought damage throughout Newton, with trees down and roads blocked. Winds estimated at 70 to 80 mph were reported at Colfax, IA, a gust of 85 mph was measured just south-southwest of Prairie City, IA, and the National Weather Service's peak official gust was 99 mph at the Marshalltown airport.

A shingle can crease in wind like that and settle flat again, looking fine from the driveway. Jasper County also logged five tornadoes in 2024. The USDA Midwest Climate Hub notes that hail turns up often in the growing season, with May, June or July bringing most states their largest share of severe-hail reports.

Jobs That Fall Under Storm & Hail Damage Roofs

  • Lifted and creased shingles. Tabs that folded back and lost their seal, plus ridge caps and edges.
  • Bruised shingles and dented metal. Loose granules, and dents in vents, gutters and trim.
  • Limb strikes. A falling branch can crack the deck or framing, so the roofer checks the attic too.
  • Fresh leaks. Water is traced to where it gets in, often some distance from the drip.
  • Patch or full tear-off. Damage on one slope may be a repair; damage across the roof is usually priced as a replacement.

Cost Factors for Storm & Hail Damage Roofs

A storm re-roof is priced by material, size, pitch and any decking to replace. These are 2026 installed averages for Iowa as a whole, not your price.

What Happens on the Day

  1. You fill in the form with the storm date and anything you have noticed.
  2. A roofer from the area gets in touch to pick a time.
  3. The roofer checks the slopes, flashing and attic, and photographs signs of storm damage.
  4. You receive a written estimate that separates repair from replacement where both are options.
  5. After you sign, the roofer does the work. Ask the City of Newton's Building Division beforehand about a permit; the roofer normally pulls it.

The Difference a Local Match Makes

A roofer from the area knows what central Iowa wind and ice do to a roof. This site hands your request to one such independent company, which pays the site a fee; you owe nothing. The site does no roof work and stays out of your claim.

Iowa has no roofer trade license. Instead, a contractor whose construction work brings in $2,000 or more a year has to hold a state registration, which you can confirm on the state's contractor registration lookup. Ask to see proof of liability insurance too.

Filing a Roof Claim

The claim is between you and your insurer, or a public adjuster or attorney you hire. Iowa law bars a residential roofer from representing you on the claim, negotiating it, or advertising that it will. A roofer can document damage and price the work.

Before anything is fixed, photograph each side of the roof from the ground, plus dented gutters, broken limbs and new ceiling stains, and note the storm's date. Stay off the roof.

  • Deductible deals. Iowa bars residential roofers from advertising a deductible rebate, or promising to hand back any share of it, to win the work.
  • The bold-type notice. On an insurance-related job, the roofer must give you a bold-type written notice, before or at signing, that you may owe the full contract price whatever the insurer pays.
  • Your claim money. Never sign over your insurance payment. If post-loss benefits are ever assigned to a contractor, Iowa limits that contractor to being a co-payee with you and your mortgage lender, and lets you cancel the assignment for any reason, without penalty, during the first five business days.
  • Sales made at your home. A sale of $25 or more made at your home, away from the seller's place of business, can be cancelled until midnight of the third business day.
  • No exit after a denial. Iowa offers no special window to cancel a roofing contract when an insurer turns down a claim.

Good to Know

Can a roofer tell me whether my insurer will pay?

No. A roofer can show you what it found and what the work would cost, but your insurer decides coverage under the terms of your policy. For questions about how a claim is being handled, start with your agent; the Iowa Insurance Division also helps policyholders.

Should I wait for a leak before asking for a look?

Not necessarily. Shingles that lost their seal often show no leak at first, and water can soak the decking for months before a stain appears inside. An early visit after a strong storm also gives you a dated record of what the roof looked like.

Are impact-rated shingles worth asking about?

They can be. Impact-rated (Class 4) shingles are a choice, not a requirement, and some insurers price a policy lower for them. Ask your agent whether yours does, then ask the roofer to price a Class 4 option beside a standard shingle.

Does a storm re-roof in Newton need a permit?

That has not been confirmed, so check with the City of Newton's Building Division before any work begins; your roofer normally pulls whatever permit applies. Homes outside city limits in unincorporated Jasper County should ask Jasper County Community Development instead.
